Whimsical summer wedding in El Paso, Tx
The garden wedding inspiration you needed with some advice for real couples
Every once in a while, a styled shoot comes along that reminds you why you fell in love with this industry in the first place. Our styled shoot at Los Portales Venue this last May was exactly that.
When photographer Vivian of Stories by Vivian first shared her vision with our team, we knew we were in for something special. She described wanting the day to feel like summer in its purest form - light, romantic, colorful, and full of life. Rather than boxing every vendor into a single rigid concept, she wanted the shoot to become a reflection of each artist's strengths, while still feeling cohesive. That freedom is exactly why we decided to go big and create not one, but three cakes for this shoot.
A Story, Not Just a Styled Shoot
What made this day different from a typical editorial was Vivian's approach from the very start. The concept began with a simple mood board, but somewhere along the way it evolved into something closer to storytelling. Every frame felt soft, youthful, and emotionally honest. For Vivian, the deeper meaning mattered too: she sees marriage as sacred, but also wanted this shoot to capture how joyful, playful, and vibrant it can be, leaning into movement, laughter, and genuine connection.
Coordinator Celina of Falling For You Events felt that same pull toward simplicity and joy when Vivian first brought her the concept. In her words: saying yes was easy, because she instantly fell in love with Vivian's vision. It was whimsical, joyful, and effortlessly beautiful, a reminder that wedding days don't have to be overly complicated to be meaningful.
The Real Couple Behind the "Styled" Shoot
Here's the part that gave everyone on set chills: Emma and Jorge, the couple featured throughout the day, were an actual married couple who hadn't yet had their traditional ceremony. Celina shared that because the couple was real, their first-look moment seeing each other in wedding attire was authentic and raw, and every vendor present felt like they were witnessing a genuine wedding day.
Vivian echoed this as her favorite moment of the entire shoot: watching Jorge see Emma for the first time in her gown. Even though the shoot was styled, that reaction was completely real and couldn't have been planned or posed. This is exactly the kind of unrepeatable moment that reminds her why she loves documenting weddings in the first place.
Ella Grace of Lion Lamb Photography, who also captured the day from a documentary lens, felt the same shift happen in real time. Because it's difficult to capture authentic moments during a styled shoot, it took a little time for Emma and Jorge to come out of their shell before the team could capture fun, genuine moments between them. For Ella, the goal was always bigger than a pretty picture: creating memories that last matters more than a perfect aesthetic, and she believes Emma and Jorge walked away with images that will stay with them for a lifetime.
Jewelry That Told Its Own Love Story
Every detail on Emma mattered, right down to the jewelry. Jessica Marquez Morales, company ambassador at Johnson Jewelers, styled Emma head to toe in Gabriel & Co. pieces from the Kaslique collection. That included graduating diamond spike ear climbers, a matching diamond spike bar necklace, and a Bujukan diamond spikes split bangle, paired with a floral oval diamond engagement ring and open diamond band. Jorge wore a hammered white gold wedding band styled alongside a classic Bulova watch.
Jessica's approach to curating the perfect bridal look starts long before pieces are chosen. She explained that her first step is always getting to know the bride through her vision, her inspiration, and the details of her dress — things like bodice, neckline, and pearls all play into finding the right pieces. And when it all comes together? The bride's expression says everything. She doesn't just love the jewelry, she feels like the main character of her own childhood dreams.
The Vendor Team That Made It All Flow
None of this comes together without a coordinator holding the vision together behind the scenes. Celina put it simply: the key to coordinating any wedding is a great vendor team, and every vendor involved in this shoot was the best at what they do. Her job was making sure everyone stayed aligned with the overall style and feel. The biggest challenge of the day wasn't the vendors, it was the clock — making sure there was enough daylight to capture everything, because every part of the shoot turned out to be so beautiful.
Vivian felt that same time crunch from behind the camera, sharing that the team had a full shot list but only a small window of usable daylight, made even tighter by overcast skies that limited natural light more than expected. What she was proudest of wasn't speed, it was teamwork. Every vendor stayed calm, collaborative, and focused on giving the couple a wonderful experience, handling the behind-the-scenes coordination so Emma and Jorge never had to carry any of that stress.
Advice for Real Couples Planning Real Weddings
Beyond the beautiful images, our vendor team had some genuinely useful advice for engaged couples:
On hiring a coordinator, Celina recommends it wholeheartedly: bringing on a planner is one of the best ways to actually be present on your wedding day, since someone experienced knows what to expect and how to smoothly handle anything that doesn't go as planned.
On choosing a wedding cake, our own advice echoes what our fellow vendors shared: look for a team that takes the time to understand your vision and actually translate it into a design that fits you and your wedding. It’s worth asking whether they have cakes on display and a catalog you can flip through during the consultation. There’s a real difference between browsing photos of cakes a baker has actually made versus sending over a Pinterest screenshot and hoping for the best. And don’t skip the tasting, trying the actual cake, filling and frosting beforehand means no surprises on your wedding day. The right cake team won’t just recreate an image, they’ll help you figure out what you actually want and then bring it to life.
On choosing jewelry, Jessica suggests budgeting early: setting aside dedicated funds for wedding jewelry is worthwhile because quality gold pieces can be worn for years and passed down for generations, and when it comes to style, going with your gut is usually the right call since the first choice is almost always the final one. She also noted that the real, floral-inspired engagement rings and bands, along with emerald and oval cuts, are especially popular right now.
On choosing a photographer, Vivian's advice is to look for connection over posing: a great photographer won't ask you to become someone else for the camera. They'll help you feel comfortable enough that your real personality comes through naturally, since the best photos come from genuine connection, not stiff poses. Ella Grace put it even more directly. Her number one tip is to choose a photographer who genuinely cares: someone confident, professional, and invested in getting to know you as a couple rather than just capturing pretty images.
Three Cakes, One Story
Getting to create three different cakes for this shoot instead of just one was such a gift. Each cake had a different shape and size and all were covered in textured buttercream, hand piping details and a few blooms. Having multiple cakes allows couples to choose more flavors without limiting themselves. We enjoyed being part of the same love story everyone else on set was telling through their own craft. This style shoot is a beautiful reminder of what happens when a whole team shows up aligned around one vision: everyone gets room to do what they do best, and somehow it all still feels like one seamless day.
To Vivian, Celina, Ella Grace, and Jessica: Thank you for your insights and a stunning day of collaboration. And to Emma and Jorge, thank you for letting us all be part of your real love story.
Thank you to the incredible vendor team for a stunning day of collaboration.
